Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) is collaborating with the NCSEM-EM to deliver a private sports cardiology service.

Dr John Walsh, NUH Consultant Cardiologist, will be working with a team of expert cardiac physiologists from Nottingham to deliver, whenever possible, one stop clinic visits. The clinic will provide cardiac screening for elite and amateur athletes, in addition to assessment of athletes with symptoms or abnormal cardiac tests. Athletes with heart disease may also be referred for advice on exercise prescription and rehabilitation.

Athletes and patients referred for assessment will benefit from state-of-the art equipment
and surroundings at the NCSEM-EM. The centre has a wide range of facilities including a consulting suite, electrocardiogram (ECG) and echocardiography, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, ambulatory monitors and MRI.

Sports screening will be offered at two levels according to individual requirements using European Society protocols*.

Basic: Consists of an electrocardiogram (ECG), screening questionnaire and cardiovascular examination by a consultant cardiologist.

Professional: Identical to the basic screen but includes also an echocardiogram. This is set to the standards of the Football Association using well-established protocols.

In selected cases or for older athletes an exercise assessment may be recommended.

*No screening completely excludes all forms of heart disease

Abnormal screening tests

Screening tests at the National Centre or elsewhere may be considered abnormal. The clinic offers the facility for secondary investigations which wherever possible will be organised at a single visit. More complex investigation may require referral elsewhere.
