England's Chief Medical Officer's annual report 2018: better health within reach

Professor Dame Sally Davies’ tenth report as Chief Medical Officer considers what the state of the public’s health in England in 2040 could look like.

The report concludes that there are reasons to be optimistic but that greater effort to improve the health environment is required – it should be easier to take the healthy option. There are four main sections in the report, discussing:

  • health as the nation’s primary asset
  • the health environment we live in and build together
  • using emerging technologies to improve health for everyone
  • effective planning for the future.

Professor Dame Sally Davies’ report is independent of government and is aimed at government, regulators, policy-makers and healthcare professionals. Each recommendation is targeted at specific organisations. The report has been developed with the help of expert academic input.
