This public lecture was delivered by Dr Stephen Mears, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Loughborough University, in June 2021.Supplement use in sport is a multi-million-pound industry. Athletes often view supplements as a quick and easy way to gain a competitive edge but what is the scientific evidence to support this?In this talk Dr Mears explores the evidence of some popular supplements and the impact they may have on performance. Is there a genuine physiological benefit from taking supplements or is it all in the mind? He also explores the darker side of supplements and what happens when athletes make the wrong choice.

Stephen is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Nutrition in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. His research examines nutritional interventions for health and performance in endurance exercise with current focus on hydration and renal health/function and the influence of carbohydrate metabolism and hypohydration on exercise performance. He is involved in marathon medical care research, sitting on the research board for the International Institute for Race Medicine.
