How can exercise and folic acid influence the health of blood vessels?

We’re looking for healthy young (18-35 years) and middle-aged (50-60 years) adults to take part in our study investigating how exercise and folic acid can influence the health of blood vessels.

We want to investigate the effects of exercise and folic acid (a nutrient found naturally in many fruits and vegetables) supplementation on the structure and function of blood vessels. This experiment will investigate blood vessel function at rest and after a single bout of exercise, both before and after four weeks of supplementation with folic acid.

We need volunteers that fit into either of the two categories below:

Healthy young adults:

  • Aged 18-35 years
  • Engaging in less than two hours of structured exercise each week
  • Non-smoker
  • No known cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or other chronic diseases

Middle-aged adults:

  • Men aged 50-60 years
  • Postmenopausal women aged 50-60 years
  • Non-smoker
  • No known cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or other chronic diseases

You will be required to make three visits to the laboratory at Loughborough University over a two-month period. We will take the following measures:

  • Fitness test
  • Blood samples
  • Non-invasive assessments of blood vessel health
  • Blood pressure
  • Resting ECG (middle-aged adults)
