FAQs

The NCSEM-EM is a partnership between Loughborough University, the University of Leicester, the University of Nottingham, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Building upon evidence for the use of physical activity to effectively prevent, treat and manage  disease, and enhance wellbeing, the NCSEM-EM brings together the research, education and clinical capabilities of the partner universities and NHS trusts to facilitate the translation of research into education, training and clinical services.

Our aim is to apply world-class expertise to policies and practice that will benefit the health and wellbeing of the nation – from everyday people at risk of ill health through to elite athletes.

All clinical operations run from the NCSEM-EM site are offered through University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Therefore, NCSEM-EM staff members cannot give medical advice. This must be obtained from your GP.

No, our clinics are NHS referral only.

If you are pursuing clinical services at the NCSEM-EM, the first step is to visit your GP. If your GP deems it suitable, they will then refer you to either the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) or the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL). You will then have the option to choose the NCSEM-EM from a list of venue options and your appointment will be booked through one of these trusts (NUH or UHL). Your GP cannot send a referral directly to the NCSEM-EM.

If you want to read further on our clinicians and request to be seen by a specific person, visit the following link: https://www.ncsem-em.org.uk/patients/consultants-and-clinicians/.

No, currently we do not offer a private service and do not offer bespoke treatment. We are currently operating on an NHS referral system; please speak to your GP if you are pursuing referral for NCSEM-EM services. Private clinics may become an option in the future. Please check our website for updates.

No, clinical services in NCSEM-EM are run by NUH and UHL NHS trusts. NCSEM-EM staff cannot offer any medical advice. Please contact your GP, the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) or the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) if you are seeking medical advice or a medical appointment.

Whilst we host clinical services at the NCSEM-EM, these are governed by the respective clinical bodies who report to, and are inspected by, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England.

Although we are located on the Loughborough University campus, which is known for its sporting reputation, we are equally unable to provide medical advice or a second opinion on sporting injuries or sporting medical incidents. The NCSEM-EM is a separate organisation of which Loughborough University is one partner. The academic research team at Loughborough University are not practicing clinics nor do they have a background in practicing healthcare, and therefore cannot give medical advice.

We do not offer private clinical screening for these purposes. Testing of this nature would need to be done by a private medicine physician. We advise you to look at one of the local private hospitals where one of the consultants may be able to offer you this service.

We cannot make a recommendation on a specific institution or clinician.

At the NCSEM-EM, we have the option for private MRI scans but we do not have a reporting facility. The MRI that is on site is mainly used for NHS activity or research activity. (Private MRI slots at the NCSEM-EM are bookable between 4:30pm – 5:30pm on Monday to Friday.)

To undertake a private MRI, patients must take it upon themselves to hire the services of a radiologist (a doctor specialising in imaging techniques) to report on the scan before it can be booked at the NCSEM-EM. For medicolegal purposes we will not accept a booking until we have received confirmation that you have hired a radiologist which costs around £200.

If you are pursuing a private MRI scan in the local area, Spire and Nuffield are able to offer a scan with a formal report included and this is often the easier option.
